If you are not sure which kind of card you have, you do not need to be. Go to the Check your balance page, paste your code into the box at the top, and it will tell you which system it belongs to and where to check it.
That is the whole answer for most people. If you want to see each credit on your account separately, with its own "Use by" date, open your Gift Wallet — you will need to be logged in. The rest of this article is the detail.
Why there are two
We run two separate systems, and they do not share a balance. A code only works on the one it was issued for. They cannot be swapped, combined or transferred.
You can tell them apart by looking at the code:
A code with letters in it is an online code. It works at coffeeangel.com.
A number with no letters is a café card. It works in our cafés.
Online eGift Cards and store credit
These are bought on coffeeangel.com, or emailed to you as a code.
There are two places to look, and they show different things.
The Check your balance page. Paste in a code and it shows the total left on it. No login needed.
Your Gift Wallet, in your account. This lists each credit on its own, with its own "Use by" date, alongside your gift cards and your transaction history. You will need to be logged in.
Or use the link in your original email.
To spend it, paste the code into the Discount code or gift card box at the standard checkout. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay skip that box, so your code will not apply if you use them.
Some store credit expires. Credit from loyalty rewards or a welcome offer is valid for 60 days from the date it is issued and carries a use-by date. Goodwill credit, which our team issues if something has gone wrong with an order, does not expire. Online eGift Cards do not expire.
A balance can be made up of several credits with different "Use by" dates, so there is no single expiry date for a whole balance. Your Gift Wallet is the place to check: it shows each credit and the date it must be used by.
Café gift cards
These are the plastic cards, and cards bought at the counter in any of our ten cafés. They work in the cafés only and will not apply at the online checkout.
Check a café card balance online. You will need the 16-digit number from the back, and the PIN if your card has one.
Or ask any of our team in a café and they will check it for you.
A café card entered on the online balance page will come back as not found. That does not mean the card is dead. It means the online system cannot see it, because it is held separately.
If you have ended up with the wrong one
It happens, and it is easily sorted. The two cannot be converted into each other, so we refund the original purchase and you buy the right one. The refund goes to whoever paid, so if you were the recipient we may need the buyer's order details.
